The German Democratic Republic in 1980: Barbara, a young physician, wants to leave the home country. But as soon as she had filed departure documents she had been sent to the small town as a punishment. And now Jörg, her beloved, who lives in the West, is planning a new escape for her. At the beginning of the 1980s of 20th century German linguist Klaus Kugler with his wife and three children goes to the jungles of New Guinea, where he studies the language of the recently discovered indigenous tribal. Unlike other members of the family, 8-year-old Sabine is quickly adjusting to the new place and she is learning values, traditions, customs and knowledge of the natives. However, the whole family living peacefully their lives does not entirely suspect that they are in the center of a tribal conflict. Despite the mutual will to stay away from each other, the ways of the newcomers and natives begin to constantly intersect with time. Nine years later, already 17-year-old Sabina forced to leave New Guinea and she gets into the boarding school in Switzerland, where she meets again a world completely foreign to her with its difficulties and conflict.

Katrin is trying to get a job, Nike takes care of the elderly and frail persons. And the extraordinary truck driver comes into their lives. Nike is trying to convince herself that finally found the right man, Katrin, in turn, is shocked that her friend now prefers sleepover on the balcony to tumbling with Ronald. Being stalled in a quagmire of her own problems, Katrin forgets about her son Max, who has a passionate, unrequited love and wants to win favor with the girl using expensive sneakers. The main characters are experiencing personal dramas, quarrel, but eventually return to the favorite balcony.

Tobi and Achim were close friends for many years. They, the leaders of the rowing team, have been winning in sports competitions many times, and now they are practicing in the rural camp. Seeing that relations between Achim and Sandra, who is training in girls’ team, become more serious, Tobi begins to understand that feelings he has for Achim, are much deeper than he thought. He feels embarrassed and lost, being rejected by his friend and team. Sandra’s friend Anke begins to take an interest to Tobi, what makes him even more anxious. When it turns out that the group of so expected Berlin girls’ was replaced by the another team, Tobi and his teammates are suddenly faced with their prejudices, fears, and, perhaps, the hidden longing. Tension is growing, Tobi, Achim and other are moving towards an ever more severe confrontation, as violent and liberating as the summer storm, which is about to begin at the lake. Toby realizes that he has to admit, what he was afraid to say earlier.

But for her parents it is more difficult to get used to it.  And only because of love for their daughter they begin to embrace the beauty of the local landscapes. The events shown in the film are autobiographical and are based on the book of the same name by Stefanie Zweig.

Here she breaks with the religion and her family, in which she always felt sheltered, under the influence of freedom, love to Stefan and friendship with Hanna. As a result, her illness has worsened. But it weren’t ordinary epileptic attacks, but horrifying hallucinations. Frightened by the fact that she could be sent back to her parents’ house, she confesses to the priest, who convinces her that she is possessed by the devil. Stefan and Hanna urged her to go to a psychiatrist, but they can not break her faith and moral standards in her family, and leave her to fate.
